America’s young people – from kindergartners to university students – have the desire, energy and ability to make a real difference in their communities. The goal of our magnet is to facilitate students becoming active and contributing members of their community through service-learning.
In the On-the-Job Training class, students learn work place skills
while they engage in service to their community.

Students work at a variety of community non-profit sites as part of their On-the-Job Training. Above is a student in the laundry at Casa del los Ninos, an agency that provides crisis shelter for children who are at risk of child abuse or neglect, domestic violence, family crisis and/or homelessness.
Howenstine has a remarkable history of service...
Students sponsor blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross
Students deliver books and games to the UMC children's pediatric oncology floor.
Math students graph and measure growth and precipitation in their garden for the Community Food Bank
By integrating community service projects with classroom curriculum, service learning provides a unique opportunity for Howenstine students to use what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems. In the process, students develop academic and practical skills, self-esteem, and a sense of civic responsibility while meeting community needs.
Students who participate in service-learning are likely to continue to work all their lives in many different ways to improve the world around them, with lasting benefits for our country & our planet.
