1. Guided Reading Activity 16-2 is due Tuesday (started in class last Wedneday).

2. Chapter 7, sections 1 & 2 due Wednesday. Extra credit sections 3 & 4.

3. Notebooks are due Monday- charts all filled in.

4.  More extra credit:  find articles in the newspaper on the legislature (Congress).  Write a brief summary of what they are doing.

Election Scrapbook is due on Friday - This is both in class and homework - We will work on it in class on Wednesday, complete as homework for Friday.  If you haven't completed the paper on what the Arizona State Government positions and candidates are, you better hurry.  You will need that on Wednesday.  Don't forget to define the roles (for example, the role of governor is to enforce the state laws.)

Everyday: Materials for your Election 2011 scrapbook are due Wednesday, the scrapbook will be due after the election next week.  We will start the scrapbook in class on Wednesday.

Extra Credit:  Have a dinner conversation with your family about candidates and the propositions.  Who is running in your district state district?  Who is running in your US district?  Who is running in your city ward?  What are the propositions that concern you most?

Debate Tuesday, November 2nd.  Choose a position or a proposition to debate.  Get the facts first.  Then decide what you value.

Students may go to the library and check out a textbook or a CD of the textbook to take home and complete unfinished or missing work.


Every two weeks I send home progress reports.  They should be signed by the parent/guardian and returned within one week.


Course Description

·         Students will identify their roles in civic life, politics, and government.

·         Students will identify the foundations of the American political system.

·         Students will understand how the government established by the Constitution embodies the purposes, values, and principles of American democracy.

·         Students will understand the relationship of the United States to other nations and to world affairs.

·         Students will identify their roles in American democracy.

·         Students will become familiar with current events at the local, state, national and international levels as they relate to government and how it functions.

All topics covered this year are established by the Arizona state standards for education. 

Classroom Rules & Procedures:

·         I will come to class on time and prepared with all needed materials.

·         I will help take care of all school property.

·         I will strive to do the very best that I can on all my assignments.

·         I will be respectful to all students, teachers, and administrators.

·         I will observe and abide by all rules and procedures of the class, school and district. 

Required Materials: Paper and a writing utensil.  A folder or notebook used only for this course, as it will be turned in for a grade. 

Assignments: There will be several types of assignments given throughout the year to determine each student’s grade in this class. Both written and performance based assignments will be given to properly assess each student. Assignments will range from quizzes, homework, tests, student notebooks, cooperative learning, and student presentations, etc. It is the responsibility of each student to obtain and finish any make-up work within the time required.  All late work, other than makeup work for excused absences, will earn a lower grade. 

All Social Studies courses require students to demonstrate the following:

·         Critical thinking skills
