Academics
Academic classes at Howenstine High Magnet School are based on the Arizona State Standards. Projects, lessons and activities begin with the goal of all students meeting or exceeding these standards. Quality service learning activities are tied to the curriculum and academic standards that include planning, action, reflection and celebration. There is a culture of diversity appreciation, high expectations, and respect for all students through innovation, collaboration, and personal and social responsibility. Howenstine provides an individualized student-learning and service-learning based model of instruction which includes authentic and meaningful experiences to help students develop qualities needed in the 21st century.

CTE/JTED JTED (Joint Technological Education District) in conjunction with TUSD’s CTE (Career and Technological Education) programs will provide community and school based resources to enhance career skills and employability options for students. Howenstine High Magnet School has two JTED funded programs which are articulated with Pima Community College credit. JTED combined with CTE is a critical component of the TUSD curriculum and ensures delivery of premier and rigorous courses. As a result of JTED funded CTE programs in TUSD, students will be prepared for a variety of post-secondary experiences such as higher education as well as professional careers. Howenstine High Magnet School now offers opportunities in Architectural Design, Computer-Aided Drafting, Engineering, Construction, and Sustainability with an emphasis on Green Technologies. |
Career Center Howenstine High Magnet School’s Career Center provides information on career exploration and post-secondary planning. Materials on careers include self assessments, resume and cover letter preparation, interviewing tips, job-shadowing, school-to-work, internships, summer opportunities and job research information. Materials on colleges and universities include brochures, catalogues, test preparation and information on SAT and ACT, scholarships, federal grants, financial aid and educational goal-setting. Materials on armed forces include ASVAB, US military academies, military service and vocations. Howenstines’ Career Center is a foundation for students and parents to discover and learn about options after high school through educational planning, career choices, military information and other post-secondary resources. |

Service Learning Howenstine High Magnet School uses service learning as a teaching method where guided classroom learning is deepened through service to others in a process that provides structured time for reflection on the service experience and demonstration of the skills and knowledge acquired. There are 4 types of service learning and include direct service, indirect service, advocacy and research. All service learning meets a community need and the academic requirements in the curriculum. |
Technology Howenstine is a wireless campus. All classrooms are equipped with multi-media stations. There are three mobile labs and a computer lab adjacent to the library. Students have access to on-line courses and can work ahead or make up classes. Students have the opportunity to check-out a laptop-tablet during the school year. Technology is used for learning, research, and developing 21st century communication skills. Howenstine's technology allows students to work collaboratively, e-mail assignments to teachers and vise-versa, and enhances communication between students and teachers. |
